The month of Elul

The month of Elul

is a Jewish month in the Jewish calendar.

This is the month

preceding the month of

Tishrei,

and Tishrei has special Jewish Holidays.

The month of Elul

is an acronym 

taken from a phrase in the book of

Song of Solomon.

The phrase is

"I am my beloved's and my beloved is mine."

Practicing Jews realize that God loves them tenderly.

Elul

is a month of repentance.

God

instructed

the Jewish people

to take this month and

focus on repentance.

This month

prepares the Jewish people

for the

Feast of Trumpets

which is also called Rosh Hashanah,

and

ultimately

for

Yom Kippur -

The Holiest Day of the Jewish Year.

Note that

Yom Kippur

is a day of fasting

and

completing any repentance

needed

in the Jewish person's life -

to God or to people.

Here are three examples

from the

abundant repentance verses

in the

Old Testament

Psalm 38:18 AMPC

For I do confess my guilt and iniquity; I am filled with sorrow for my sin.

Isaiah 55:6-7 NKJV

Seek the Lord while He may be found,
Call upon Him while He is near.
⁷ Let the wicked forsake his way,
And the unrighteous man his thoughts;
Let him return to the Lord,
And He will have mercy on him;
And to our God,
For He will abundantly pardon.

Psalm 51:1-2 NKJV

Have mercy upon me, O God,
According to Your lovingkindness;
According to the multitude of Your tender mercies,
Blot out my transgressions.
² Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity,
And cleanse me from my sin.

During the month of Elul,

    dedicated Jews often read Psalm 27 - sometimes daily.
