What are problems with
The Shack

The Shack

attacks central themes of the Bible:

The Shack denies that:

Jesus came to take our punishment for sin.

See: 1 John 2:2, 1 Peter 2:24, Isaiah 53:4-10

The Shack denies that:

God punishes sin.

See: 2 Thessalonians 1:7-9, Luke 13:24-28, Matthew 5:22, Matthew 5:29-30, Genesis 19:15,  Genesis 4:13, Isaiah 13:11, Jeremiah 21:14, Isaiah 26:21

What is important

is not

if something makes us feel good

or

if it changes our life for the better in some area -

the important thing is -

Does it lead us astray in important Bible doctrines?

In video interviews I've watched,

Paul Young

the author of the movie

The Shack

says that

his belief is

that ALL will one day

end up with God in heaven.

Paul Young claims that

the Bible does not say they won't.

But...

Jesus says:

We enter heaven by a Narrow Gate and FEW find it:

"Enter by the narrow gate.

For the gate is wide and the way is easy

that leads to destruction,

and those who enter by it are many.

For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life,

and

those who find it are few."

Matthew 7:13-14 ESV

Also see Matthew 7:21

Also see the verse:

"And to you who are troubled

rest with us,

when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven

with his mighty angels,

in flaming fire

taking vengeance on them that know not God,

and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ:

Who shall be punished with

everlasting destruction

from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of his power."

2 Thessalonians 1:7-9 KJV

In Paul Young's new book

he again repeats that

he believes everyone gets to heaven.

On Page 118 Paul Young

asks himself

the key question of Christianity

and then he answers his question.....

Paul Young asks himself in the book:

"Are you suggesting that everyone is saved?

That you believe in universal salvation?"

Paul then answers his question:

"That is exactly what I am saying."

The Above is from page 118 of Paul Young's book:

Lies We Believe about God -

In that book, Paul turns the Bible upside down

and calls the truth of the Bible "lies."

The Shack has the word Creation (captialized) 20 times. In the New Age that means that God is in Everything.

The movie "The Shack"

is a warm, comforting movie

and

may make people feel better

and it may even change someone's life -

but

it contains lies

that come against the Bible.

This movie attacks

several of the MAIN principles of the Bible.

The Shack

attacks central themes of the Bible:

The Shack denies that:

Jesus came to take our punishment for sin.

See: 1 John 2:2, 1 Peter 2:24, Isaiah 53:4-10

The Shack denies that:

God punishes sin.

See: 2 Thessalonians 1:7-9, Luke 13:24-28, Matthew 5:22, Matthew 5:29-30, Genesis 19:15,  Genesis 4:13, Isaiah 13:11, Jeremiah 21:14, Isaiah 26:21

or

if it changes our life for the better in some area -

the important thing is -

Does it lead us astray in important Bible doctrines?

Fourth, on page 122 Papa says, “I don’t need to punish people for sin. It’s not My purpose to punish it”. On page 164 the character of Wisdom says to Mack, “I am only asking you to do something you believe God does. You believe He will condemn most…Is that not true?” Her meaning is that the assumption that God will judge is wrong.

But God says in His word in Isaiah 13:11, “I will punish the world for its evil and the wicked for their iniquity”. Rom. 2:8 states, “For those who do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, there will be wrath and fury”. Jesus warns us in Luke 12:5 to, “Fear Him who, after He has killed, has authority to cast into hell”. God is love, but His love is also just and holy. I Peter 1:16 says, “Be holy for I am holy”. We cannot choose to love and accept only part of God’s nature, nor can we define God on our terms. Either He is who He says He is or He is not God at all.

Mr. Young consistently leads readers to the conclusion that our enemy and his followers do not exist. He never refers to Satan. Mack is the only one to speak of hell and whenever he does he is ridiculed. I’ll cite three examples here:

– On page 138: Papa says, “Both evil and darkness can be understood only in relation to light and good, they do not have any actual existence”.
– On page 192: Papa states, “All evil flows from independence and independence is your choice. Evil is the chaos of this age that you brought to Me”.
– On page 164: Wisdom infers the fallacy of belief in God sentencing anyone to hell.

Jesus, Himself spoke very vividly of the reality of hell. (Luke 12:5, 16:23-24) I John 3:8 says, “Jesus came to destroy the works of the devil”. In Eph. 6:11 and I Tim. 3:7 we are warned about the schemes and snares of the devil. And in Rev. 20:15 we are told of the destiny of those whose names were not found written in the Lamb’s book of life.

I don't recommend this article because I disagree with the author in many respects.

Peterson who wrote The Message endorses The Shack.

Consider 2 Peter 1:16 as a warning against The Shack.

Notice that the devil is not in The Shack.

In The Shack on page 112, it describes God.... "God who is the ground of all being, dwells in, around, and through all things."

41:17 in Wide is the Gate number 2

That is pantheisam - that God is in every person and every thing. That idea is at the root of the New Age which is also called New Spirituality which is quickly moving into churches today. New Age / New Spirituality says that "We are God." Meaning - everyone.

The Bible NEVER says that we will become God or become a god.

Ephesians 4:6 would be the only verse believers could point to. This verse is speaking to believers. Jesus tells us that when we repent of our sins and follow him [Jesus] THEN we are one with him and in a sense - one with other believers. BUT the Bible says that we have no unity with unbelievers. Unbelievers are separated from God.

We MUST receive Jesus and his message.

1 John says that when we believe in Jesus as our Savior and Lord and follow him and the Bible - we are his children.

We must be born again. Jesus uses those words with Nicodemis - sp

I haven't heard this past -

Universalism is the theological view arguing that all persons will ultimately be saved. Some also teach that there is no such thing as a literal hell or eternal punishment.

From Wikipedia: Christian Universalism is a school of Christian theology which includes the belief in the doctrine of universal reconciliation, the view that all human beings will ultimately be restored to a right relationship with God in heaven and the New Jerusalem.

https://carm.org/the-shack

Universalism is the unbiblical teaching that through the atoning work of Christ all people will be saved.  The book seems to hint towards that, but I wasn't sure if Mack was saying that God was advocating it.  On page 225 we are told by God, "In Jesus, I have forgiven all humans for their sins against me, but only some choose relationship."  Logically, if all humans are forgiven of their sins, then all humans go to heaven.  This is the doctrine of universalism, and it is a heresy that is contradicted by scripture (Mark 3:28; Matt. 25:46).

Here is another concern.  Does God place expectations on us?  Does He expect us to believe in Him, to follow Him, to seek to be like Christ, to love others, to worship Him in truth, etc.?  Of course He does, yet on page 206 Papa (God the Father) says, "Honey, I've never placed an expectation on you or anyone else.  The idea behind expectations requires that someone does not know the future or outcome and is trying to control behavior to get the desired result."  Well, this is a problem since God does expect certain things from us, and it is not necessarily true that an expectation from God means He doesn't already know what the result will be.  God knows we are sinners, yet expects us to be holy.  God says, "you shall be holy, for I am holy," (1 Pet. 1:16).  God expects us to pick up our crosses and follow after Christ (Matt. 10:38).  So, again, the Shack comes up short.

Is it worth reading and supporting a book that is 90% good and 10% bad even if that book helps people?  A lot of people would say yes.  But, the Bible warns us about just such a thing. "Your boasting is not good. Do you not know that a little leaven leavens the whole lump of dough?" (1 Cor. 5:6).

From the video above

“Hell becomes restorative.” Here he is clearly implying that hell can take you to heaven.

He will say, “We know from the Bible” and use what the Bible says to make a point.

Then he will say, “The

1. God the Father was crucified with Jesus (p96).

Because God’s eyes are pure and cannot look upon sin, the Bible says that God would not look upon His own beloved Son as He hung on the Cross, carrying our sins (Habakkuk 1:13; Matthew 27:45).

2. God is limited by His love and cannot practice justice (p102).

The Bible declares that God’s love and His justice are two sides of the same coin — equally a part of the personality and the character of God (Isaiah 61:8; Hosea 2:19).

3. On the Cross, God forgave all of humanity, whether they repent or not. Some choose a relationship with Him, but He forgives them all regardless (p225).

Jesus explained that only those who come to Him will be saved (John 14:6).

4. Hierarchical structures, whether they are in the Church or in the government, are evil (122).

Our God is a God of order (Job 25:2).

5. God will never judge people for their sins (p120).

The Word of God repeatedly invites people to escape from the judgment of God by believing in Jesus Christ, His Son (Romans 2:16; 2 Timothy 4:1-3).

6. There is not a hierarchical structure in the Godhead, just a circle of unity (p122).

The Bible says that Jesus submitted to the will of the Father. This doesn’t mean that one Person is higher or better than the other; just unique. Jesus said, “I came to do the will of Him who sent me. I am here to obey my Father.” Jesus also said, “I will send you the Holy Spirit” (John 4:34, 6:44, 14:26, 15:26).

7. God submits to human wishes and choices (p145).

Far from God submitting to us, Jesus said, “Narrow is the way that leads to eternal life.” We are to submit to Him in all things, for His glory and because of what He has accomplished for us (Matthew 7:13-15).

8. Justice will never take place because of love (p164).

The Bible teaches that when God’s love is rejected, and when the offer of salvation and forgiveness is rejected, justice must take place or God has sent Jesus Christ to die on the cross for nothing (Matthew 12:20; Romans 3:25-26).

9. There is no such a thing as eternal judgment or torment in hell (p248).

Jesus’ own description of hell is vivid … it cannot be denied (Luke 12:5, 16:23).

10. Jesus is walking with all people in their different journeys to God, and it doesn’t matter which way you get to Him (p182).

Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life, and no one will come to the Father but by me” (John 14:6).

11. Jesus is constantly being transformed along with us (p182).

Jesus, who dwells in the splendor of heaven, sits at the right hand of God, reigning and ruling the universe. The Bible says, “In Him there is no change, for He is yesterday, today, and forever” (Hebrews 11:12, 13:8; James 1:17).

12. There is no need for faith or reconciliation with God because everyone will make it to heaven (p122,192).

Jesus said, “Only those who believe in me will have eternal life” (John 3:15, 3:36, 5:24, 6:40).

13. The Bible is not true because it reduces God to paper (p65,66,134,198).

The Bible is God-breathed. Sure, there were many men through 1,800 years who put pen to paper (so to speak), each from different professions and different backgrounds, but the Holy Spirit infused their work with God’s words. These men were writing the same message from Genesis to Revelation. If you want to read more about the place of Christ in the Scripture, read “We Preach Christ” (2 Timothy 3:16)”
